Hog Application: System Solution

One of the largest family-owned pork processers was building a new plant with the goal of having a completely modern facility from start to finish. FRC was called in to design a wastewater treatment system to meet discharge goals for a large volume of wastewater (1.3 MGD) containing high levels of Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS).

FRC engineers designed a multi-stage approach that would minimize solid waste, generate clean effluent, and recover re-usable oils as a separate product. The wastewater treatment system was integrated with the overall plant automation system to allow for data collection and remote monitoring.

FRC Solution

  • Rotary Drum Screen – Removes coarse solids prior to further treatment such as hog hair and small pieces of meat
  • High Rate DAF #1 – Uses dissolved air without chemicals to recover oils
  • Equalization – Homogenize wastewater for consistent wastewater characteristics. Aeration mixing is provided to prevent anoxic conditions and formation of ammonia
  • Flocculator (Duty/Standby) – Chemicals dosed to precipitate the colloidal solids
  • High Rate DAF #2 & DAF #3 (Duty/Standby) – Floats the precipitated solids, yielding clarified wastewater
